Structural materials

Wood has a number of excellent attributes, and can be used in a range of different building applications. From domestic buildings to low-rise commercial, industrial, public, civic and farm structures, the potential of wood is enormous.

Structural materials

Timber structural materials include solid timber, such as sawn timber, round timber, and engineered products such as Glue-laminated timber (Glulam), and Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL), panel products and plywood. New timber structural materials are being developed in New Zealand and around the world through thorough research at institutes. The latest technologies include Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and Post tensioned sheer walls, columns and beams.

Key Features

Key Features:

  • Radiata pine LVL was prefabricated into curved (and twisted) ribs in Hunter’s factory in Nelson.
  • These timber I-beams were joined, overlapped in layers, then screwed together as they were assembled on site by Hawkins Construction.
  • The exceptionally light structure ultilises timber members only 316mm deep at 4.25m centres to span almost 30m.
  • The weaving of the timber structure to create a timber net or ‘gridshell’ is recalled by the local hapu as a hinaki or Maori eel trap.
