Timber Design Awards
TUMU ITM building Centre Napier
In this project, the inventors, engineers and builders have collaborated to use the EXPAN Quick-Connect concept, an expedient moment connection for portal frames.
The Quick-Connect connection consist of pre-fabricated, pre-installed LVL sleeves, screwed to the main portal frame LVL rafters and grooved to allow the insertion of threaded rods that are fastened to the receiving columns or rafters. The Quick-Connect allows the expedient installation of rafters to timber, steel or concrete columns thus reducing significantly the crane usage time required during erection.
In the ITM Tumu building, the Quick-Connect concept was used between the LVL rafters and the steel columns, at the LVL rafter splices and at the LVL rafter apex connections. The LVL rafters have a cross-section of 90 x 1200 mm and a span up to 30 m. The use of Quick-Connect connections did allow full moment capacity of the LVL rafter.
The design/builders team collaborated to make this use of the Quick-Connect the first major one in the large span warehouse type application. As a result of the success of this project, one more timber portal frame project utilising the Quick-Connect is underway.
The Quick-Connect connection concept was developed at the University of Auckland within the Structural Timber Innovation Company project.
