Timber Design Awards

Meridian First Light House

The Meridian First Light house is Victoria University’s entry into the US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011.

The Solar Decathlon challenges twenty university teams from around the world to design, build and operate a solar-powered house that is cost effective, energy efficient, and attractive. The modular house was constructed in New Zealand and transported to Washington DC to compete on the world stage.

As a traditional and sustainable New Zealand building material timber was a clear choice for the Victoria team who aimed to take the best of New Zealand to the world with their Kiwi bach inspired house. Timber has been used extensively in all aspects of the houses construction; including the structure, exterior envelope and interior fit out of the house. The bach aesthetic has been realised through the use of a combination of sustainably sourced timbers from a number of New Zealand suppliers.
