Raglan Sleep Out
The Raglan Sleep out was a collaboration between owner Marty Verry, building designer Eddie van Uden and product designers Abodo Wood Ltd.
The sleep out design incorporates locally sourced FSC certified timber products only throughout the building – everything from the interior framing from Red Stag Timber to the exterior claddings and interior linings. As the sleep out was being designed for the children, low toxicity building materials was of importance.
A key feature of the house is the exterior natural wood cladding that features Elements Vulcan+ rusticated weatherboards. This provides an aesthetically pleasing natural wood finish alternative to imported Western Red Cedar, and features chemical free natural durability, superior stability and excellent weathering characteristics. The weatherboards are supplied factory coated with a specially formulated Protector plant-based oil finish with zero VOC’s.
The rhombus privacy screening along the base of the building and solar screen is treated with a low toxicity arsenic and solvent-free preservative system and finished with plant based Protector oil.
In addition Elements Sand+ radiata pine decking features a low toxicity non-arsenic preservative, has vertical grain orientation for superior weathering and is pre-finished with Protector oil. This product replaces what would normally be an imported hardwood or toxic treated softwood in this application.
Locally sourced radiata pine plywood dominates the interior giving a fresh and natural beach feel to the space. A clever retrievable stair design allows access to the loft, while maintaining space in the living area when not in use.
The over-all effect is a high grade of finish in a house that would typically have utilised tropical and/ or exotic species and that has minimal impact on people and the environment.
