Is there a New Zealand-grown hardwood available?

There are both indigenous and exotic hardwoods grown in New Zealand.

Some of the indigenous species are of limited practical use for construction applications, and nearly all are in very limited commercial availability.

Indigenous hardwoods include:

  • Beech
  • Tawa
  • Pohutakawa
  • Kowhai
  • Manuka/Kanuka
  • Pukatea
  • Puriri
  • Rata
  • Taraire

  • Mangaeao

Locally-grown exotic hardwoods include:

  • Australian blackwood (Acacia)
  • The Eucalypt family
  • English elm
