Project Description:

The constraints of building on small narrow inner city sites and the embedded inner city typology of painted weatherboards and painted timber joinery asks for new solutions.

The use of wood has been a sustainable historic solution in these inner city suburbs with many of these houses still well intact and approaching a century in age.

On this small and narrow site we were required to increase the volume and capacity of one of these houses in a way that complied with day-lighting constraints, the language of the street and the intimacy of the small rear garden.

The use of wood consists of plywood floors, hoop pine inlaid with Jarrah strip, plywood walls, cedar and  saligna screens, saligna joinery frames and cills, cedar sashes, jarrah bench top and screens. The Exterior cladding is ‘Shadowclad’ plywood with cedar battens, meranti soffits and saligna balustrade

Both interior and exterior are finished with natural oil stains that can be layered up over the years.
