Project Description:
The Warburton Residence in Wanaka is an inspired balance of cedar boards and bagged schist. It has been designed to respect the local surroundings as well as enhancing them. A series of linked, gabled pavilions, the house is reminiscent of a collection of rural buildings which have evolved over time.
Intensive use of timber, both structurally and aesthetically, has been made throughout the house providing ageless appeal through the use of neutral materials.
The house is fully framed in New Zealand Douglas Fir, including all roof framing and pergolas. Douglas Fir has been used for framing by this particular architect for over 30 years in the Central Otago region as it much better suited to the requirements of the dry Central Otago climate.
Western Red Cedar has been used for the rusticated weatherboards and all fascias and trim.
Inside chalet style roofs form a spacious, open interior, but with the warmth of New Zealand Beech T&G ceilings. New Zealand Beech has been used for the ceilings, doors, all joinery, stairs and custom-designed furniture. All of the furniture has been specifically designed for this home by the architect, including built-in cabinetry for several of the rooms. Beech was used intensively because of its sustainability, colour and ability to provide warm, comfortable spaces.
