This 2 storey family home is near to Ngamotu Golf Course. Clients are golf friendly and were keen to capitalise on their views of the greens. The design responded by locating all living areas on the first floor. A low pitched almost flat roof with generous cantilevered soffits to the north provides good summer shading to the living areas.
A significant feature of the design is a series of 5 large timber sliding screens that provide privacy to the entire living areas when needed and without feeling totally shut off. These screens are deliberately designed to look and feel delicate whilst strong enough to provide the desired function. Cedar was chosen as a material that could perform well in this regard. The screens are made of cedar frames and nimble verticals hung of steel structure and sliding mechanisms. Exterior walls on the upper level were timber frame/cedar weatherboards and they helped reinforce the linear form of the building.
