Project Description:

A new par-72 championship golf course, pride of the South Pacific, officially opened in June, alongside the new InterContinental Resort at Natadola at the western end of Fiji’s Coral Coast.

Designing a building on such an exposed site both visually and physically became an important criteria in arriving at an appropriate solution. Understanding the traditional buildings of a Fijian village and how they are grouped, became inspirational to breaking up the clubhouse into a cluster of smaller spaces.

The individual roofs allow the wind to move over, around and through the building depending on the time of year and provide cross breeze for cooling. The most dynamic roof form that gives this sporting destination its focal point is 16 metres high and is an interpretation of the traditional Bure Kolo. In a traditional Fijian village, the Bure Kolo is where the Priest/Medicine Man lives and is as respected as the Chief.

The material palette is simple and natural complementing the landscape and suitable for the Fijian climate. The cedar shingle roofs are used to great effect by extending and shielding the verandas and interior.

Taking pride of place on top of the hill and dominating the horizon, this new Clubhouse has become a landmark in Natadola and a welcome addition to Fiji.
