Project Description:
This bach has two distinct architectural forms, a cube and a wedge. They are linked by a boardwalk and a deck. The cube is the main part of the bach and is a large voided open plan living area with a mezzanine sleeping area. Along the boardwalk is the wedge where the visitor’s quarters are located. A large expansive deck, orientated to adjacent water views, connects the two forms and facilitates communal activities of the owners and visitors.
Sustainability was key consideration in the design of this bach. It is constructed entirely from renewable timber as are most of the exterior materials. Sited on steeply sloping ground, to support the house, a treated radiate pine pole platform with Glulam beams was chosen for its efficiencies. Floors, walls and roof are constructed out of treated radiata pine. The use of Hyspan LVL beams to support wall, floor and roof loads made the cube’s large open plan voided area possible. The rich texture of Timberbond and Strandboard were chosen for the flooring materials. The deck and boardwalk are treated radiata pine. Hoop pine plywood is the lining to the interior walls and on the exterior is Shadowclad with a grid pattern detail of pine battens, both providing the structural bracing. The flexibility of the timber framing and cladding allowed one of the walls to transition over its length from straight to sloping.
