Project Description:
Bowls is the ‘slow food’ of New Zealand sport, a game enjoyed by over 100,000 participants, and a very important component of the social and recreational lives of many often senior citizens. It is a sport unique in the extent to which players improve their game with age, much like timber buildings, well into their later decades.
The client, Carlton Cornwall Bowls, wanted to create a new built environment that would signal a progressive future for the sport. The new Clubhouse development replaces the old and dated original facilities.
A fundamental early decision was to use timber for the building envelope, as this material was most able to reconcile functional requirements, historical associations and a modern, forward-looking design intent.
