Project Description:
There was an arts and crafts house on this site, made of brick and built in the 1930′s. It sat very well in relation to the old lawn, but the rear of the house was neglected and essentially designed for service spaces only. Our proposal involved re-building the house around a courtyard giving its inhabitants an alternative relationship to the outside (refer diagram to the right).

The atmosphere of the new house is one of both art and craft, but avoids a nostalgic replication of the traditional arts and crafts. The atmosphere relies on timber for its capacity to be crafted artfully: curved, laminated, combined, and finished to suit the application. Timber was used for carefully crafted cabinetry, screens, ceiling battens, flooring, doors and windows, cladding and furniture. Indeed, timber was the fundamental ingredient to the success of this house.
