Project Description:

The principle design direction was to utilise timber sourced from the family Reporoa farm forestry , near Rotorua.

The design strategy was to develop two distinct shed like forms of a rural vernacular. The pavilion nearest the sea contains the living areas and bedroom. The second pavilion houses the workshop, garaging and guest accommodation.

The pavilions are clad in bandsawn 175 x 30mm thick Macrocarpa board over battens, allowed to weather and grey to a silver sheen. This offers a taut and visually simple exterior surface, with the benefit of a drained cavity.  The pergola structure, garden shed and stained cladding to the pool are also all in Macrocarpa.

The design sought to follow through this refined  rural vernacular to the interior. The floor structure to the second floor bedroom is of 75mm thick Macrocarpa beams on an exposed steel frame and the flooring throughout is Saligna, sourced near Tauranga. Joinery fittings are of sustainably harvested hoop pine plywood and solid saligna shelving.
