Because of the small size of the country, most Kiwis will have had someone close to them affected by last Saturday morning’s 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Christchurch. All week we’ve been keeping a close watch on media reports from the Canterbury Region and our hearts go out to all those that have been involved in some way with the quake. Recent reports suggest more than 100,000 out of 160,000 homes in the area have been damaged. A rather perverse outcome is that most economists are predicting the cut in earnings caused by the earthquake will be 0.2-0.5 per cent of GDP in coming months, but that over the next 12-18 months the kick start to the reconstruction sector could add more than 1 per cent to economic growth.
