Consents for timber as ‘Alternative Solutions’ Part One
NZ Wood talks to a building consent authority about using timber where the work is not automatically covered by the Building Code and is considered an alternative solution.
In the first of a series of articles, Wellington City Council’s Manager of Major Projects and CBD Building Consents and Licensing Services, Robert Tierney, offers advice and explains the process of gaining consent for alternative solution proposals.

Designers urged to make submissions!
The Minister of Building and Construction, Maurice Williamson, announced yesterday that consultation would begin for the proposed amendments for the building code. He is urging the sector to make submissions.
“Without compromising quality or safety, the overall aim is to simplify and clarify regulations. We want to maintain or improve the current level of protection and safety while making it easier to design good quality medium-density housing,” the Minister said.

Entries have now closed for the NZ Wood Timber Design Awards 2010. We would like thank all of the entrants for their wonderful submissions.
You will be able to view all of this years entries (and vote for your favourite) through the online presentation which will be going live on the NZ Wood website this Monday, the 13th September. Keep an eye on the website here for the unveiling!
The Awards Evening is being held at Te Papa in Wellington this year from 5.30pm on Monday the 11th October. Tickets are $30pp and they are selling quickly. This event is a great chance to network with various people across many different facets within the timber industry. We have limited tickets available, so register soon before they run out. Timber Design Seminar
The Timber Design Society is hosting a seminar prior to the awards function on the 11th October. Also being held at Te Papa, this seminar will be featuring past award entrants and award winning designs using timber. They have a combined registration for the seminar and the awards function; places are limited, so get in quick!
