Painting of treated wood

This section discusses the considerations for painting of treated wood.

Provided the timber has dried and the timber surfaces are clean of dust and other debris all paint types can be used on timber surfaces. Follow the paint manufacturer’s recommendations.

Boron–treated timber for H3.1 applications; fascia, weatherboard, joinery, is required to be primed before dispatch from the manufacturing facility. In-service all H3.1 treated products for these end-use applications are required to have a 3-coat paint coating. Cut ends are also required to be primed before installation.

Additional guidance on painting of buildings can be obtained in the joint standard, AS/NZS 2311:2000.
