How Wood

Wood is a product of the future. Solutions are being developed all the time to push the boundaries of what is possible with timber design.

This section covers the bases of how wood can and should be used. Wood has so much potential. Building multi-story timber buildings for a range of different purposes is a reality with the solutions and technologies available today. Long-span timber solutions allow wood to be used as a structural material in warehouses, commercial buildings, public buildings and farm buildings. Then of course there are the multitude of residential and DIY applications for which wood is the perfect solution.

Treatment and durability

This section provides information on the durability of wood, including building legislation requirements, treatment, the compatibility of treated wood with other materials, fasteners and treated wood, gluing, painting and moisture considerations, health and safety and disposal of treated timber.

View

Structural design

Structural design in timber differs from design in other materials, due to the anisotropic nature of the material and also the great variation in material properties.

View

Seismic design

This section gives the background to specific engineering design of lateral force resisting systems for timber buildings. When making specific engineering calculations, earthquake forces must be obtained directly from the standards.

Floor dynamics

This section includes information on static deflection and vibration as part of floor design.

Structural connections

Structural connections include nails, screws, bolts, coachscrews, rivets, pins, dowels, epoxied rods, glues and other structural connectors including ply gussets, metal plate fixings, and nail-on plates.
