Advice On: Engineering & Design
Welcome
Sustainability
The huge amount of atmospheric carbon stored permanently in wood means that a large commercial building can effectively be carbon neutral or better – the wood offsetting emissions associated with other, less sustainable, building materials.
Strength
A structural timber column has the same strength as a concrete column of the same size. Engineered wood gives a structural material of predictable strength and stiffness.
Safety
Wood has a lower mass than concrete or steel which lowers the risk of structural damage from major earthquakes, and its ductility gives it added resilience. The fire performance of a large structural member is superior to steel in an intense fire – charring at the rate of only 40 mm per hour.
