Serpentine Pavilion

Alvaro Siza and Eduardo Soto de Moura

This temporary pavilion was part of an annual event promoting contemporary architecture.

Serpentine Pavilion

Each year a foreign architect, who has not born in the United Kingdom, is invited to design a pavilion in Hyde Park. A simple gridshell structure with alternate members placed either side of the node points was used to create an asymmetrical curved form. It was built from standardised 500 mm deep, 39 mm thick spruce ply-beam components that were machine cut to shape. The structure was clad with translucent acrylic sheeting and lit at night by solar lamps.
