The architect had originally designed the ships’ hulls for the foyer in steel, but New Zealand-based McIntosh Timber Laminates proved that a laminated radiata pine solution (glulam) would be more cost effective than using steel.
Glulam radiata pine timber was selected because it has proven fire resistance and low levels of maintenance. Prefabrication and pre-assembly allows for fast erection on site and accurate dimensions. The project used 34m long x 7m deep ’keel’ prefabricated trusses, which were all pre-made and preassembled in the Auckland factory and shipped to the Dubai site. The hull shape was formed with curved Glulam gunwale and ribs.
This allowed an internal service area for ducting above the gunwale, and planking to be fixed to the ribs for the exposed hull shape.
