The building is a 200 m long x 120 m wide oval form enclosing a single volume and is one of the largest laminated timber structures in the world, with a span of up to 115m.
Sixteen two-hinged portal truss arches span in the short direction at 9 m centres. Each portal truss is a different shape because of the irregular building cross section. Glue-laminated purlins span longitudinally, with diagonal braces and a plywood diaphragm. Timber was selected for more than structural reasons; the wood’s acoustic properties, sustainability, fire-resisting potential and aesthetic effect were all seen as beneficial to the design.
