Baumschlager & Eberle
This building is interesting because portal frames, generally avoided by architects, are the main structural elements.
Exposed portal frames are associated with low-cost buildings. But here they are transformed through the use of curves to soften their appearance and invite new architectural interpretation. Careful detailing of the members, such as tapering combined with unobtrusive connections, gives the structure lightness and elegance. The use of identical materials for the structure and almost all internal and external finishes provides a uniformity that is aesthetically pleasing. Innovative fenestration occurs on three floors at the office end of the building, and along one side of the showroom parallel and adjacent to the main road. Here, portal columns pass through a window display case and are displayed together with other timber products.
